I like to train by loosely following Hal Higdon’s race plans. I use his training programs as a base for my personal half marathon training schedule and re-jigger according to life events. For my first half marathon, I strictly followed his novice schedule. My second half (though I admit I poorly trained for it), I began to incorporate some speed work and hills into my training. I print out my plan in calendar form and give myself shiny stars every time I successfully complete the scheduled workout. Yes, that’s right folks. I take it back to kindergarten level. It works for me.
Training plan for my 2012 RnR Half

Love the shiny stars idea! I print mine out in calendar form too and X out the workouts I complete.
You will love the MCM 10k. I ran it last year (it was the race that got me into running) and will be there again this year!
Dins! It’s Les-Les! I’ve been stalking your blog and I love it! Austin got me a Garmin Forerunner 405CX for Christmas- since I’m getting into running more seriously since my first 5k back in Sept. I noticed that you’ve used Garmin software…do you like it? And does it get easier to use – I haven’t read the manual yet- I guess that would help!
My Garmin is probably the most valuable training tool I have. I use it for EVERY run. I have the 305, which has buttons on it instead of the bezel. It is super duper easy to use after you play around with it a bit. I’m so excited Austin got you one! Now, you can start training for things like this upcoming half marathon in March… you in? I’ll shoot you an e-mail to try to entice you even more to sign up with us.
